Can You Get Sunburnt In a Sunroom?

For those that crave more sunshine minus the outdoor elements, a sunroom is the perfect solution. But some may wonder if basking in the gleaming sunshine indoors is entirely harmless. So, it begs the question, can you get sunburnt while in a sunroom? Let’s see.

The answer to this question is, it depends. And it depends on what kind of windows your sunroom has. For the most part, home windows can block the majority of UVB rays, but some UVA rays can still slide through. UVA rays are the ones responsible for tanning and sunspots. And both UVB and UVA rays can cause skin cancers.

As for sunburns, yes, those are possible to receive behind glass as well. The likelihood of receiving a sunburn in your sunroom increases the longer and closer you sit to the window as well as how high the UV index is at that part of the day. The UV index is typically highest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As for vitamin D, this is something you still need to go outside to get. Glass windows block out vitamin D. Even still, the brightness from the sunshine in a sunroom can brighten your mood.

The best way to protect yourself from harmful sun rays is to invest in quality double or triple pane windows for your sunroom. Most windows that let in harmful UVA rays are older ones, so upgrading yours can go a long way. Or even if you do not want to completely replace the windows you have, you can have a UV blocking film installed over them to increase their safety.
